Everbound - Brodi Ashton Nikki Beckett convinces the immortal (Everliving) Cole to join her on a journey into the labyrinth of the underworld (Everneath) in order to rescue her boyfriend, Jack.“So he earns your undying love by reading a book under a tree?” Cole said dryly. ”Why didn’t I ever try that approach? I like books and trees.”It’s not often I find a book where I enjoy the sequel more than the original, but this one definitely falls in that category. Unlike Everneath, this second book not only delved more into the relationships between Nikki and Jack, and Nikki and Cole, but the characters were also working towards a clear purpose and goal. The flashbacks gave more insight into the background of the characters than the previous story had, and I felt like Nikki was actually doing something instead of just moping and pining over Jack. Also, I liked the ending a lot better; it was much less predictable. There were still a few questions that didn’t get adequately answered. For instance, I still don’t really ‘get’ the Daughters of Persephone. How can they be descendants of Forfeits if the Forfeits don’t have any human connections? Why wasn’t Mrs. Jenkins a Forfeit herself? Also, how is it that the ‘tether’ from Everneath to the Surface works the same whether you’re in the Feed or in the Tunnels?Overall: A more exciting, more intense, and more compelling novel that the first book.
